SENSEI FERNANDO
INSTRUCTOR
Starting karate at the age of 7 years old, my original motivation to train was to be with my best friend but unfortunately in class I lacked discipline and listening skills. However, after a few years of sticking with karate, I came to appreciate karate as it helped me overcome bullying and gave me confidence at a time where I was struggling to find it. Afterwards my efforts were more focused and thanks to the guidance and encouragement of Sensei Hamid I began competing and overcoming many more obstacles and challenges in karate and life. Nowadays I have the honor to compete as part of the Canadian National Karate Team. When I’m not training or competing, I dedicate my time and energy towards teaching karate and coaching students nationally & internationally. My goal and hope is to pay forward the mentorship I’ve received from Sensei Hamid along with sharing what I’ve learned throughout my journey to the next generation of students. My most notable competitive achievements are a silver medal at the Junior Panamerican Championships, a bronze medal in team kumite at the 2025 Senior Panamerican Championships and being 3 time consecutive Senior Canadian National Champion

SENSEI KIANA
INSTRUCTOR
Began competing in kumite at 14. At first, I found competing tough, but over time I started to really enjoy it. I’ve now been part of the national team for five years and have represented Canada at the Pan American Championships, where I finished 5th. Teaching is one of my favourite parts of karate. I love seeing kids gain confidence, learn new skills, and have fun as they grow in the sport. Coaching at tournaments is especially rewarding — there’s nothing better than seeing my students smile as they step onto the podium. When I first started karate, I struggled a lot with self-confidence. Over the years, karate has helped me discover who I am and build belief in myself both on and off the tatami. My goal as a coach is to help my students have that same experience — finding confidence, reaching their potential, and enjoying every step of their karate journey.

SENSEI ZACK
INSTRUCTOR
My karate journey started at the age of 4 with Sensei Hamid at the Roundhouse Community Centre. My mom had said she wanted her children to take up martial arts and at the time, my older brother was already taking karate classes led by Sensei Hamid so I joined the junior class soon after. What started as just an after school activity where I could exercise and experience martial arts with my friends has now turned into a 13 year long journey and has become a staple part of my life. Competition Experience I am going into my 10th year of my competitive karate journey. I have represented British Columbia on the National stage for the last 9 years and have been on the Canadian National Team for 6 of the 9 karate seasons that I have been a part of and have represented Canada at the Panamerican Championship on 4 separate occasions. General Teaching Experience and Notable Achievements In regards to my teaching experience, I have a total of 9 years of experience. To break it down, the first 2 years were volunteer experience, 3 years as an assistant instructor, 4 years and ongoing as club instructor for our Downtown location at the Roundhouse Community Centre. I am a 3 time National Vice Champion and a 5 time National bronze medalist. I am a trained NCCP karate instructor beginner and in training for karate competition introduction. Also a Provincial level official under Karate BC. Tiger’s Eye Impact on my life Tiger’s Eye has had a major impact on my life. Not only has the club helped develop my self-esteem, it has provided the opportunity to meet life-long friends. Sensei Hamid has been an important person in my life who has not only just taught karate, but has been a part of my journey in self growth throughout my adolescent years. Karate has had an impact on the development of my character and has kept me grounded throughout my life.

SENSEI CARLSON
INSTRUCTOR
I’ve been training karate since I was 7 years old. At first I started because my parents wanted me to get active but the more I trained the more I fell in love with it. I loved training with my friends and learning about myself through the sport. I started competing professionally when I was 14. I lost most of my first tournaments but wanting to keep growing and fix my mistakes. Every year I looked forward to the national championships in hopes of moving up to the next level. Eventually I made the national team and got to go compete internationally with my teammates. I’ve been teaching since I was 15. This year I turned 25 and am proud to see so many of my students from over the years are still in the sport, still learning and still growing. I hope one day they surpass my achievements. When I was 17 I moved to Vancouver to pursue a career in film, but wanted to keep competing in karate. tigers eye welcomed me with open arms. It became my home away from home. Eventually I couldn’t fit both film and competing into my life but couldn’t leave karate behind. While I still pursue film in my free time, I have chose to teach at tigers eye so I can also keep karate in my life I take great pride in my teaching journey and am thankful for tigers eye for giving me a place to pass on my knowledge

SENSEI SOFIA
INSTRUCTOR
My name is Sophia, and I began my karate journey at the age of four at a community center in North Vancouver. What started as a fun activity quickly became a core part of who I am. I trained consistently through my early years, eventually earning my black belt, and began competing at five years old. I’ve been fortunate to consistently medal in kata and kumite, often placing silver in both divisions across various age groups in mainly local competitions like Canada Open. But beyond the medals, karate taught me various qualities that I wouldn’t have possessed if it wasn’t for my time with this sport. There was a point where I took a long break from karate. Coming back wasn’t easy but I’m incredibly grateful for the people who pushed me to return, as I wouldn’t be the person I am now without them. One of the most meaningful parts of my journey has been teaching. I’ve volunteered as an assistant instructor, working with kids aged 3 to 12, across all belt levels. Helping others learn and grow in karate gave me a new perspective, it made me excited seeing the future generation growing and I was happy I was part of their growth. Since returning, I’ve worked harder than ever, placing first in the BC Team Selections and earning a spot on Team BC for Nationals 2025. Training with Tiger’s Eye has shaped who I am, and no matter how difficult the journey becomes, I’m committed to continuing with gratitude, passion, and heart. The overwhelming support from everyone around me feels like family, not by blood but by our shared ambitions, values, effort and support and it’s something I can tell I won’t be able to find anywhere else.

SENSEI OLIVIA
INSTRUCTOR
My name is Olivia and I started karate when I was four years old at Tigers eye karate do. Over the years of training it became a big part of who I am. Although I did take a two-year break to focus on other parts of my life, coming back reminded me the reason I started in the first place, to challenge myself, to keep growing and to become stronger both mentally and physically I am now a proud black belt and have competed in numerous Canada Opens and other competitions earning medals and pushing myself to improve with every tournament. While I haven’t yet competed internationally, that’s one of my next big goals as I continue to grow as both an athlete and a person. Outside of competing, I volunteer as an assistant instructor at the Roundhouse Community Centre, where I help children ages three to twelve develop their skills and confidence. Teaching has taught me the value of patience, leadership, and the joy of helping others discover their own potential. Throughout my years at tigers' eye I learned so many valuable lessons, from developing the right mentality to finding the perseverance it takes to keep going. Finding a place like Tiger’s eye felt very special to me because I felt a sense of belonging, I couldn't find anywhere else. Training alongside the people that push me to be greater each day is something I will never take for granted, as those are the people who truly make my journey at Tigers Eyes so special.

SENSEI TALYA
INSTRUCTOR
I started karate when I was nine years old, planning to do it just for the summer at Tigers Eye’s community center program. I was the youngest kid and the only girl in my class, and my parents didn’t think I’d stick with it, but Sensei Hana and Hamid made it such a welcoming and fun experience that I decided to keep going, and I’m so glad I did. Karate has become a huge part of my life and something I look forward to doing every day, and the bond within the Tigers Eye Team is like no other. Our team feels like a family, and I always feel supported and have so much fun with everyone. I’ve met so many amazing people through karate, and some of my closest friends today came from this sport. Even though karate is an individual sport, it truly feels like a team sport at Tigers Eye. While representing my dojo, province, and country, I've had incredible experiences I never expected. Karate has also taught me a lot about discipline and respect—both for others and for myself. It’s helped me become much more confident, not just in competition, but in everyday life. I look forward to continuing my journey in this sport with this team as this is just the beginning, and I hope to support younger kids the way my coaches supported me! SENSEI COCO
INSTRUCTOR
My name is Coco and I started karate when I was nine years old. I first started training at the North Shore Neighborhood house and started to develop a passion for it. I soon moved to train at the dojo back in Welch Street. Starting at ten years old, I started competing in local competitions. Competing with Tigers Eye Karate-Do helped me understand how to handle respect for other players and it grew my excitement for karate even more. When I got my green belt, I started volunteering classes and taught kids how to grow their confidence and techniques. After six years of training, I finally achieved my black belt! With the help of Tigers Eye Karate-Do, I found an amazing group of people who pushed me to improve and believe in myself. Today, I continue to compete as a member of the Karate BC team and the National Team. Tigers Eye Karate-Do is a dojo that taught me discipline and respect. Not only that, but it also helped me grow as a person and make new friends in the dojo, and with other people who compete in karate as well. I am looking forward to represent Tigers Eye Karate-Do at competitions and improve myself even more.
